Do Maine Coons Like Water? The Truth

💧 Breed Education⏱ 6 min read

Euro drinks exclusively from the running faucet. Coco dips her paw in every water bowl before drinking. One of our kittens once climbed into the bathtub while I was filling it — and looked annoyed when I moved him. So yes, Maine Coons like water. But "likes water" doesn't mean "wants to swim laps." Here's what water fascination actually looks like when you live with five of these cats.

Why Maine Coons Are Drawn to Water

The leading theory: their semi-waterproof double coat. Maine Coons evolved in wet, snowy New England environments. Their outer coat repels water rather than absorbing it, which means getting wet isn't the uncomfortable experience it is for most cats. They don't feel that cold, clinging-fur sensation that makes other breeds flee from water.

Their curiosity compounds the effect. Maine Coons investigate everything — and running water is irresistibly interesting to a breed that thrives on novelty and stimulation.

What Water Fascination Looks Like

Common Water Behaviors

  • Drinking fountain obsession — most Maine Coons strongly prefer running water over still bowls
  • Faucet watching — they'll sit by sinks and stare at dripping faucets for embarrassing amounts of time
  • Paw dipping — reaching into water dishes and playing with the surface
  • Shower interest — following you to the bathroom and watching from the edge
  • Splashing — some actively splash water out of their bowls (invest in a mat)
  • Toilet investigation — keep the lid down (seriously)

Euro doesn't just drink from his fountain — he sits next to it and bats the stream with his paw for 10 minutes. Then he walks away soaking wet like nothing happened. Every single day.

Not Every Maine Coon Loves Water

It's a breed tendency, not a guarantee. Some Maine Coons are completely indifferent to water. Others actively avoid it. Individual personality matters more than breed generalizations.

Can You Bathe a Maine Coon?

Easier than most breeds, but still a process. Their water-resistant coat doesn't soak through easily, which means you need to work shampoo in more thoroughly. Most Maine Coons tolerate baths reasonably well if introduced gradually as kittens. Show cats are bathed regularly and learn to accept it.

Practical Tips

Living With a Water-Loving Cat

  • Invest in a cat water fountain — they prefer running water
  • Put a mat under water dishes — splashing is inevitable
  • Keep toilet lids closed
  • Don't leave glasses of water unattended on counters
  • Consider a shallow "splash tray" for enrichment

The Bottom Line

Maine Coons are more water-curious than most cats — but they're not otters. Expect fascination, paw-dipping, and the occasional wet countertop. Don't expect them to hop in the pool with you. Start your application →
