Maine Coons hold โ and have held โ multiple Guinness World Records for domestic cat size. Their extraordinary proportions aren't just internet hype. These are genuinely the largest domestic cats in the world.
Current & Past Record Holders
Longest domestic cat ever
Stewie โ a Maine Coon from Reno, Nevada โ measured 48.5 inches (123 cm) from nose to tail tip, earning the Guinness World Record in 2010. That's over four feet of cat. Stewie passed away in 2013, but his record stood for years and brought enormous attention to the breed.
Longest living domestic cat
Barivel โ an Italian Maine Coon โ took the current record at 47.2 inches (120 cm). Barivel lives in Vigevano, Italy, and his owners report that despite his extraordinary size, he's a gentle, quiet cat who enjoys being pushed around in a stroller. (Yes, really.)
Tallest domestic cat
While the tallest domestic cat record is typically held by Savannah cats (a hybrid breed), Maine Coons consistently rank among the tallest non-hybrid domestic cats, with males reaching 16+ inches at the shoulder.
How Big Do Normal Maine Coons Get?
| Measurement | Males | Females |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 15โ27 lbs | 10โ18 lbs |
| Body length | 36โ42 inches (with tail) | 30โ38 inches |
| Height | 10โ16 inches | 8โ14 inches |
These are ranges for well-bred European-bloodline Maine Coons. Our king Euro weighs 27 pounds โ which is large even for the breed โ and measures over 40 inches from nose to tail. He's not a record holder, but he makes an impression on everyone he meets.
Maine Coon Social Media Stars
Several Maine Coons have become social media celebrities, accumulating millions of followers with their dramatic size and photogenic faces. Accounts featuring giant Maine Coons regularly go viral, introducing the breed to people who had no idea domestic cats could be this large.
These accounts have been wonderful for breed awareness โ and terrible for scam operations. The viral popularity of giant Maine Coons has fueled demand, which has fueled scammers advertising "giant Maine Coon kittens" that are actually domestic longhairs or don't exist at all.
The viral Maine Coon accounts show real cats โ but they represent the top 1% of size for the breed. Your Maine Coon may not reach 30 pounds, and that's completely normal. A 16-pound female Maine Coon is still an extraordinarily impressive cat.
Setting Realistic Expectations
Size is influenced primarily by genetics, with nutrition and health playing supporting roles. European bloodlines tend to produce larger cats than American lines. Males are consistently 30โ50% larger than females. But individual variation is significant โ even within the same litter, some kittens will grow larger than others.
If you want the best chance of a dramatically large Maine Coon, look for breeders working with European bloodlines from large-boned parents. But prioritize health and temperament over size โ a healthy 18-pound Maine Coon with a wonderful personality is infinitely better than a 25-pound cat with health issues.
