Best Maine Coon Breeders in Missouri: 2026 Guide

๐Ÿ“ Regional Guideโฑ 9 min readBy Dawna Marie, Chatlerie Founder

Missouri โ€” the Show-Me State โ€” should apply that skepticism to Maine Coon shopping. The state has a mix of quality breeders and problematic operations, particularly in rural areas with a history of large-scale animal breeding operations. St. Louis families are 5 hours from Chicago; Kansas City families are 8 hours. Both cities have local options worth evaluating, but cross-state shopping is very common.

Missouri Breeder Landscape

Missouri has a complicated relationship with animal breeding. The state was historically known for puppy mills, and while legislation has improved, the culture of high-volume, low-standard breeding hasn't disappeared entirely โ€” it's just expanded to cats. Be especially cautious with rural Missouri operations advertising on Facebook or Craigslist.

That said, St. Louis and Kansas City both have TICA-registered Maine Coon breeders who follow ethical standards. The state's TICA showing community, while smaller than Illinois or Ohio, does exist and provides some accountability.

St. Louis Area

St. Louis has the stronger breeder community of Missouri's two major metros. The city's proximity to Illinois means breeders on both sides of the river serve the same market. If you're in St. Louis, expand your search to include Southern Illinois breeders โ€” many are within an hour's drive.

St. Louis to Chicago is approximately 4.5-5 hours on I-55. Several Chatlerie families have made this drive, and we also offer professional transport for Missouri families who prefer delivery.

Kansas City Area

Kansas City has fewer Maine Coon breeders than St. Louis, but the metro straddles the Missouri-Kansas border, giving families access to breeders in both states. KC families should also consider Nebraska and Iowa breeders within reasonable driving distance.

Missouri-Specific Red Flags

๐Ÿšจ Watch Out For

  • Rural addresses with multiple breeds available โ€” classic mill indicator
  • "USDA licensed" used as a selling point โ€” USDA licensing is for commercial operations, not a quality indicator
  • Kittens available at 8 weeks โ€” responsible breeders hold until 12+
  • No health testing documentation โ€” "our cats are healthy" isn't the same as echocardiogram results
  • Cash-only transactions with no contract โ€” legitimate breeders provide written agreements

What Quality Looks Like

โœ… What to Expect from a Quality Missouri Breeder

  • TICA registration with verifiable breeder number
  • Annual HCM screening by board-certified cardiologist
  • Genetic panel testing (SMA, PKD, MyBPC3)
  • Health guarantee of 2-3 years minimum
  • Open facility for visits or video tours
  • Lifetime return policy
  • Active in TICA showing community

Missouri's "Show Me" attitude is exactly right for buying a Maine Coon. Don't take anyone's word for anything โ€” ask for documentation, verify registration, and visit in person. The good breeders will welcome your scrutiny.
